Extra Cards

Holiday Cards were made by students at Royal Oak School with the idea that they would be delivered in the community. Due to the cold weather we were unable to deliver the cards. Grade 3 students are coming home with a card today to Pay It Forward to a neighbor or a friend. Please pass these along to a neighbour on behalf of the school.
Thank you!

Happy Holidays!

I hope you all have a relaxing and happy holiday season and I look forward to seeing everyone in the new year!

The Week that Twas!

We have been very busy in Grade 3 working on a few different projects and topics!  Here are the highlights!
Math
We have been learning and practicing the "stacking" strategy for math. (This is the traditional formula that we all learned as students).  Students have learned a poem to go with it:
More on top, No need to stop
More on the floor, Go next door and get ten more!

Students have been working on 2 and 3-digit subtraction with borrowing.  They have a sheet in their backpack today to show you what they learned.  We approach it with a bit of a story:

Starting at the ones place value, if the number is bigger on the bottom, he has to borrow from his next door neighbour.  If the tens place value is bigger on top, all is good.  If the tens number is smaller on top, then they have to borrow from his neighbour (the hundreds place).  Students are working through the process, and we will be practicing this more and more and more!!!

Language Arts
Students have created comics and we are just finishing them up - we can't wait to share them with you!

Science
We have completed 10 different building challenges and experiments to help students with their home building after Christmas.  Students selected their 3 favourite and uploaded a photo along with a comment about what they learned during the task.  Check out their learning in Iris!

We hope you all have a safe and happy holiday season!  Enjoy the break and we will see you all January 3rd!

The Slipper

We ran out of time to do write this with the students, but I thought I'd put up some information about the play today, as you may have questions following the notice that went home yesterday.

Most importantly, the play was fabulous: very funny and engaging with lots of audience participation.  Two of our students even got to carry the "slipper" onto the stage!

During the play, a man and his nephew travel forward in time to modern Calgary where Cinderella lives with her step mother and 2 step-sisters.  In the time-travel, one of the men ended up wearing a fancy dress - so he became the fairy godmother.  His costumes were hilarious and most kids in our class picked him as their favourite character.  Our students mostly found the kiss at the end to be the most offensive part - but as the actors explained during the question period afterwards, love is a common theme in fairy tales!

Overall, the students had a great time and really enjoyed the play - and I am hoping to take my own children sometime over the next 4 weeks it is running.  If you have the opportunity, I'd really recommend it!

Our Apologies

Dear Parents:

We apologize if you were outside in the frigid temperatures at the end of the day today. We were trying to get out the letter to you regarding new information about the ATP Play Slipper.  If your son or daughter did not receive a blue letter today about Slipper, a copy was emailed to everyone this afternoon.  Please return the letter tomorrow.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Lynn Sparks

Play Information

All students brought home a new letter regarding the play tomorrow.  This permission form needs to be returned in order for students to attend.  Please ensure you check your child's backpack!

Field Trip Fee

Hello all!
Just a reminder that the field trip cost $18 (it was easy to miss in the parent letter).
If you haven't already done so, you can pay online or with cheque or cash.

Thank you!

W.O.W.

W.O.W. (Working on Work)

In Language Arts, we've begun editing our persuasive paragraphs, focusing mostly on sentences.  We looked at what a sentence is, what a run-on sentence is, and sentence fragments.  Students had a chance to edit and give feedback to a peer about their paragraph, and they are working on making revisions to the online document.  Go online and check them out!

Students were shown pictures of houses in other communities and have been working with a partner to answer the question, "Why is this house in (Peru, India, Ukraine, or Tunisia) designed like this?  They are making a google slide presentation and these will be shared with the class next week.  (Also available online to check out!!)

In Science, students have been traveling to other classes in order to test different structures and materials.  This will take until winter break and then we will begin building when we return.

Reminder there is no school on Friday and our class visits the play "The Slipper" on Tuesday.  The volunteer was drawn today and Lisa will be coming with us.  Thank you so much to everyone who wanted to come - I wish we could take everyone!

Math Update

Hello All!  Here is a boring old teacher update (instead of the interesting ones that the students contribute to!)

Today in math class we talked about "subitizing."  This is the ability to glance at a collection of objects and know how many there are - without needing to count.  As we played the math game "Pigs" students subitize the dots on the dice and should be able to add 2 dice in their heads.  If they are still counting on fingers then they should be practicing basic facts at home.  Play with your child and as you do, note the addition strategies they are using.  Have Fun!
The game goes like this:

1. First player rolls the dice.  They add up the totals on both dice to get their
score:

2.  That player then decides whether to END THEIR TURN or ROLL
AGAIN.

3. If they roll again they can add their new total to the total of their turn.

4. The player can continue to roll again until....

 * They choose to pass the dice and end their turn.  Their points are
 "banked" at this point.

 * A # 1 turns up on the dice which automatically ends their turn and
deletes all points gained that turn!

*** If 2 Number 1's turn up in one roll (Snakes eyes) it erases that  player's banked total too (you go back to zero) and ends their turn!

The WINNER is the first person to reach 100 points.

We had a presentation from Chris Milne.  He spoke to us about 3 different words: pride, perseverance, and resilience.  He told us about when he became paralyzed on his right side with a very rare disease.  He couldn't even tie his shoes.  He showed us that you should never give up and keep working on things even if it tough.

Jordan's Great Idea!

Jordan decided we should update our blog while we are snacking! (We need to use every minute available to us!)

We are planning out our houses and getting ready to make them.  First we looked at blueprints and then we started drawing our own blueprints.  Mr. Colvin came back to help us with the designs of our houses.  We are still collecting materials in the class for building.

Amazon Expert Required!

Our class needs an Amazon Expert.  Not the Rainforest Amazon - but the shopping "Amazon" expert.  Any time I've ordered from Amazon it has taken months to arrive - I must be doing something wrong!  Our class decided we would like to use the $75 we won from the ROS Fundraising challenge to buy some educational games for the classroom - and I'm wondering if someone would be able to help us do that.  If you're an Amazon-ian - please let me know!
Thanks!

For the week...

Picture retakes are tomorrow (Tuesday)!

SoundKreations performance is Thursday afternoon and evening.  There are extra tickets available - please watch for information about how to get those tomorrow!  If students aren't coming to the evening performance, please let Ms. Rutland know via email. (mlrutland@cbe.ab.ca)

Scholastic orders are due Friday!

In Math we started subtraction.  Subtraction is when you take away numbers and we are learning different strategies to solve problems.
Noah and Sophia M.

We are working on a persuasive writing piece on rebuilding Fort McMurray.  Please read my persuasive paragraph in google docs!

In inquiry we are learning about blue prints and structures of buildings.  We defined the words "function" and "design." We learned about different types of forces ( torsion, tension, shear, and compression).  We saw abbreviations in blueprints.  Ask us what we noticed in the blueprints!

Volunteer Update

Hello all!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Cindy (Zach's mom) and I'll be helping Ms Rutland arrange parent volunteers for the classroom and field trips throughout the year.  I have set up a page on www.signupgenius.com in order to sign up parents for the various volunteer dates throughout the school year.  Ms Rutland has already posted some opportunities for November and will be adding more dates in the future, so be sure to check it out.  In order for you to view/sign up to volunteer, you first must have an up to date criminal record check and you must fill out/sign/return the form Ms Rutland previously sent home allowing me to have your email address (on the form, could you also include your email address pls).  Once we have this, I will add you to the signupgenius page.  You'll have to sign up to use signupgenius and then you're good to go!  Hope this makes sense and if anyone has any questions, please email me at cindy.l.frank@gmail.com.

Time to Catch Up!!

We've started writing a persuasive paragraph, which we write when we want to change someone's mind about an opinion.  We used a hamburger picture to plan our paragraph.

We started dance on Monday.  We are doing hip hop (from New York), Bollywood (from India), and Latin dance (from South America).  There are lots of moves with our feet.  There will be an afternoon and evening performance on November 17th.  Watch for ticket information coming home on Friday.
Noah, Taryn, Lyla

In Art, we worked on a creature in the style of Pablo Picasso.  Last week we practiced one-point perspective drawing using a railroad and road.  These drawings began with a horizon line and a vanishing point.  Ask me how to draw this!
Sean, Peter

In math, we had to count all the pumpkin seeds in the jar.  We put the seeds in little cups and with a partner we counted them by 2's, 5's, or 10's.  We are now working on how many there are altogether. A skill we could practice at home is skip counting by 10's starting at any number between 100-999.
Holly, Hudson

The Remembrance Day Assembly is on November 10th at 10:30 if you would like to join us.  The song for us to practice at home is on Ms. Mann's blog.

Today we made a graph with what the class wanted to do with the $75 we won.  Ask me what received the most votes!
Lyla

In inquiry we learned about the history of Fort McMurray.  It began as a fur trading post where people traded with the First Nations groups that lived there.  The white men only wanted to trade with the men, not the women.  They thought the women were slaves but in fact the women were the ones who were in charge of the furs and trading with other First Nations Groups.

Pumpkinella and Socktober!

Pumpkinella & Socktober - Will take place on October 31, 2016. Reminder that you can drop off new socks of any size and your jack-o-lantern on Oct.30, 2016 from 2 - 4 pm or on Oct. 31, 2016 from 7am - 8:48am. Did you know that counting the seeds of your pumpkin is a great math activity for your child? Have them estimate how many seeds they think are inside first and then count by 2s, 5s, or 10s to see how many it really had. Talking about their counting strategy and which counting method was most effective in counting all the seeds is a great way to engage your child in mathematical conversation! Happy carving!

What's New and Exciting

In Inquiry, we learned about the fire in Fort McMurray.  We watched videos and saw how scary it was for the people who had to escape.  The fire was over 750 hectares big (a hectare is approximately the size of a football field).  105 people were evacuated from the hospital - but nobody died in the fire.

The end of our first month!

Today we did the Terry Fox Run and we used tally marks to add our number of laps.  Our class ran 97.5 laps and we raised $127!!  Thank you so much to all the students who brought in money - and thanks to the awesome volunteers on the run!  This year we ran a new route around William D. Pratt and Royal Oak fields.  It was hard and tiring to run.  Terry Fox ran about 42 Km every day and in 143 days he ran 5373 Km total!  We realize how hard Terry must have worked every day.  We wrote about Terry Fox and what he was trying to do.

Parent Pay for Scholastic Orders Online

Using Parent Pay is as Easy as1-2-3! When your child brings home their Reading Club order forms, review them together and pick what you want to order just as you usually do. Then, when you’re ready to pay, go online to: parentpay.scholastic.ca
1. Fill out the form to select your child’s teacher and provide your payment details, including the Parent Pay code found on your order form(s).
2. Provide your billing and credit card information and submit your payment. You can submit a single payment for ALL flyers that have the same Parent Pay code.
3. Record your payment Reference Number on your child’s order form(s) and send them in to school so that your child’s teacher can place your order.

The online Parent Pay site is for making payments only. Your order is not complete until you send in the order form(s) to your child’s teacher and they submit the order to Scholastic. Your order will be delivered to the classroom just like usual.
