This Week at School

Bryan - We finished our End of the World Pumpkin.
Simon - We all drew our own design onto a paper pumpkin.  Then we chose 2 pumpkins that we liked by putting a sticker on 2 papers.  The paper with the most stickers was Bryan's design.
Kaelyn - Bryan's design was the most difficult one so he had to draw it on the pumpkin.
Charlie - We took turns with a group to paint the rest.
Tobe - We saw the other classes designs as well.

Our class visited the Weaselhead Flats for a field trip!
Maguire, Megan, and Tobe were saw the animals that they are researching (a spider, beaver, and muskrat).

(This is as far as we got with the students here - the rest is completed by Ms. Rutland!)

In math, we looked at building a number with place value blocks 2 different ways.  Check Iris for a photo and explanation from your child's work.

Our research into animals in the Weaselhead is progressing.  Students will be building a mask of their animal with our Artist-in-Residence beginning on Monday.
We still require 1 volunteer for October 23 and 2 volunteers for October 26th.  The rest of our days are covered - thank you!

This Week At School

Charlie - next week we will be carving or painting the pumpkin for the Sobey's display.  We still need to decide on our design.
Bryan - next Thursday is our class trip to the Weaselhead Flats.
Ava - we have chosen an animal to research.  The animal must live in the Weaselhead.  We will look for the animal that we have researched.
Hadley - We wrote about Terry Fox's life and what he's done.
Tobe - We drew a map of our classroom and learned about different kinds of maps.
Sidney - In math, we have started to learn about place value.
Maguire - We played "Beat My Number."  There is hundreds, tens, and ones and you try to build the highest number (ask me how to play!) Kaden's strategy is to put the 9's in the hundreds place!
Bryan - We had picture day!  They will come home in couple weeks.
Ava - we started learning about "Thick" and "Thin" questions.
Kaelyn - in Edward Tulane, he has turned into 4 different characters: Edward, Susanna, Malone, and now he is Jangles.
There were no Friday journals this week.

Reminders: Return Field Trip Forms if you haven't done so.

There is no school on Monday!  Have a good long weekend!

Terry Fox Run

On Tuesday, October 3rd, Royal Oak School and William D. Pratt School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run.  Students will gather on the field between the two schools to take part in the annual 30-minute run, which is scheduled to begin at 10:30am.  Students attending afternoon Kindergarten are welcome to attend, if they are accompanied by a supervising adult.

On this day please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed for the weather (including running shoes).  If the weather is poor, students will walk inside the school during their PE class time.

We are asking that each child donate a “Toonie for Terry” for the Terry Fox Foundation during the week of September 26 - October 3rd

All parents/guardians who are interested in joining their child/children in this event are more than welcome.

We do require a fair number of volunteers for this event to ensure its success.  If you have security clearance and if you are able to volunteer during the run time, kindly contact our school Volunteer Coordinator at rosvolunteers@gmail.com.

Thank you for your continued support.

Thank You!!

One final post to say thank you to you all for sharing your children with me this year!  It was a great year - full of challenges, laughs, and the odd tear now and then!!

Thank you also for the cards and gifts - I truly appreciate the generosity of this community!  I wish you all the best over the summer and next school year.  Please come by and say hello if you are in the neighbourhood!

For the students, we finished reading "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo today.  I told the class I'd put the author's name on the blog as she's written lots of other children's books.

Thank you again - have a wonderful and safe summer!

Wednesday, June 14th

As we get closer and closer to the end of the school year, it seems like there is a never-ending list of things to do - inside the classroom and out!  I apologize for not keeping the blog as up-to-date as previously throughout the year.
Here is a snapshot of what we are working on:

Math
There are a few topics we are working on (such as 3D shapes), along with reviewing concepts taught throughout the year.  Students worked on a "Pyramid Math" activity, where they used addition and subtraction to find missing numbers.

Science
We are looking at Endangered Animals and will be using the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF - I know, terrible abbreviation) to research the threats to endangered animals around the world.

Language Arts
Most students are working on illustrating their animal story - these are on google drive if you'd like a sneak peak.  (Or wait for the illustrated version to come home!)

Dear Parents:

Re: Please - Keep Fidget Spinners at Home

Recently, we have noticed an increase of fidget spinners at school which are causing disruptions in the classroom, office, lunch room and during recess. We are asking that these fidget spinners please stay at home.

If you have a doctor’s note that states your child requires a fidget spinner for educational purposes, please provide a copy of this note to your child’s teacher.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

Sincerely,
Lynn Sparks, Principal

The Week of June 9th

Tuesday was bike to school day.  It was very fun.
Zach and Dimitri

We are writing our own stories about animals and their environment.  These are "stuck stories" which means that the main character has a problem and they try to solve it a few different ways.  We worked on adding lots of description to our settings, and tried to include our animals adaptations.  Our stories were typed onto Google Docs or Slides.  The next step is to illustrate our books.
Everyone

We learned a new math game called "Farkle!"😂  In this game, we start with 999 points and try to get to zero points by subtracting.  If you would like a copy of this game to play at home, please let Ms. Rutland know!
Karina

We started a novel study: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.  Ms. Rutland is going to read 2 chapters a day so that we finish it in time!

Bike to School Day!

Our annual Bike to School Day is fast approaching. On Tuesday June 6th students are encouraged to bike to school. Last year we had incredible participation from our ROS families! We are hoping for even more participation this year! Bikes will be stored in the gymnasium and doors will open at 8:30. More information on this event will be sent home soon.

Sports Day Tomorrow

Sports Day - Thursday afternoon students at Royal Oak School will be participating in our annual Sports Day. Our theme for this year will be 'Your Favourite Sports' so we are asking students to wear a jersey of their favourite sports team or their Royal Oak School Shirt for that day. We are also encouraging all students to bring a water bottle. After our events in the afternoon students will be treated to a snack of watermelon provided by parent council.

Monday, May 29th

Students worked on their story plans for Language Arts and Science today.  They have all selected an animal and identified a few of the adaptations the animal has that make it suited for it's environment. Their animal will next discover why it doesn't do well in other environments around the world!

Here are a few photos from our "agamographs" from last week!

Tuesday, May 23

In Science, we are continuing to learn about the life cycles of different animals - and we started an art project to go along with this idea...stay tuned for photos in a day or two!

In Language Arts, students mapped a picture book in a group of 3 students.  In their groups, the students identified the main problem and solution in their story; the climax; and the rising and falling action.  We will begin working on our own fiction story using this map later this week.

Today we did an interesting math warm-up:

Students who were finished were encouraged to try and create their own missing number puzzle.  If anyone creates one at home we'd love to solve it at school!

After our warm-up, we then graphed the results from our UNESCO ballot vote.  The winner: The Ring of Cenotes of Chicxulub Crater!

Library Books Due

Hello All!
All library books will be due in the Learning Commons on or before June 2nd.

May 15-17

Catching up on a few days!!

We have started learning cursive writing when we have a few extra minutes (though those minutes can be hard to find!)  Cursive Writing is still part of the Grade 3 curriculum and most students enjoy learning this 'secret' code!

We are working on story mapping as a building block to planning and writing our own fiction stories about animals - stay tuned for those!

Students are researching information about different animal's life cycles in Science.  We are using resource books from our library and will be comparing the different stages animals go through.

In math, we are finishing up our work on perimeter.  Your child will be bringing home a perimeter assessment tomorrow for you to review with them.  They also worked on this problem today:
Ask your child how they solved the problem!

Wednesday, May 10

Today we visited the wetlands.
Creed - we saw a tipi made out of wood and there was a painting on a rectangular piece of wood.  It looked like a person in front of an oak tree.
Sophia G. - we saw lots of shells.  We decided to leave them in the wetlands.
Zach - we saw tadpoles in the water.  We also saw spiders.  We heard construction noises in the distance.
Sophia M - one tadpole had legs!
Charlotte - we saw some little shrimp-like thingies!
Brooke - when we arrived, we sat silently for 10 minutes and looked at the wetlands.  It felt very relaxing.
Lyla - when we looked into the water with the binoculars, it looked blurry - kind of like art.  Next time we visit the wetlands we will bring a garbage bag.
Sean - we saw some insects and sketched something we were interested in.
Noah - we should bring rubber boats or buckets next time for checking for bugs.
Taryn - I made some notes about a very prickly object to research at home.
Ms. Rutland - I tried to make them cry by reading "The Giving Tree" - but no one did.

Today was also "dress as your favourite book character day"!  Some of the costumes were: Kylo Ren from Star Wars; Thing One and Thing Two; a box of crayons from The Day the Crayons Quit; Pikachu; Fern from Charlotte's Web; Matilda; a narwhal; Raina from Sisters; a cake from The Cupcake Diaries; Hermionie; Jarome Iginla; the Sith Lord from Star Wars; and Stephanie from Stephanie's Ponytail.  And of course, our contribution to the teacher crayon box - the grey crayon.

Monday, May 8

We had some very exciting things happen today for the Grade 3's!  The first was a visit from Valerie Walker, an author who writes chapter books for children and teens.  Students listened to her read from a passage of one of her books, then asked very excellent questions about the writing and publishing process.

After lunch we walked up the hill for a visit at William D. Pratt.  Each Grade 3 class was paired with a Grade 4 class who helped us complete a scavenger hunt to explore the school.  We then did a relay race outside, and then headed back inside for a treat!  It was a great visit and the students loved seeing some familiar faces!

With so much in our schedule we didn't have a lot of time for math - so we just did a quick review.  Students were reminded about what the word "perimeter" means, then asked to determine what they know about the following picture.  We didn't quite finish it - but a couple mathematicians couldn't leave without figuring it out!  To be continued...

Information for Next Year

Preparing for the 2017 – 2018 School Year

Students Moving:
Please notify the Royal Oak School office if your family is moving before September 1, 2017 out of the Royal Oak/Rocky Ridge.  This will help us in planning for the next school year.  Please email the school at royaloak@cbe.ab.ca before Thursday, May 18th with your child’s name and grade to state they will not be attending Royal Oak School for the 2017 – 2018 school year.  For the students in Grade Three it is a natural transition to W.D. Pratt and that transition happens at the school level. There is no need to contact the school if your child is in Grade Three and moving on to Grade Four.

Parent Requests for Student Placement:
The following information is provided to clarify questions about their child’s placement for next year.  This should not be interpreted as an open invitation for student placement requests.

A great deal of time and consideration is put into organizing classes.  Many factors are taken into account such as a balance of girls and boys, student abilities, special education needs, English Second Language learners, student learning styles, teaching styles and overall school organization.  Your child’s teacher, in consultation with other teachers of the same grade will meet with the school administration to discuss and determine student class placement for next year.  We have the best interest of all students in mind.
Should you feel you have a significant “education” circumstance that you would like considered in your child’s placement for next year, please follow the following procedure.
ü  Make your one request in writing (multiple requests based upon class organization, friendships, etc. unfortunately cannot be accommodated).
ü  Please do not request a specific teacher as the teachers’ grade assignments are not finalized until later in the planning process.
If you have educational reasons for requesting a specific class placement for your child, please email royaloak@cbe.ab.ca before Thursday, May 18th.

Thursday, May 11th

Dear Parents,

We are holding our jump event on Thursday, May11th from 2:50-3:20. Students will be playing hard during this time and we would like to have a healthy, heart smart snack for them to enjoy after. We are looking for a parent or two to bring in enough mandarines or orange slices for your child's class to share. If you are able to contribute please contact Cindy, our room parent at cindy.l.frank@gmail.com

All students are encouraged to bring their own skipping rope if they have one. Jump Rope for Heart Pledges are also due to homeroom teachers on the 11th.

Thank you for your support as we raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Hats On for Mental Health

Hats On! For Mental Health Day!

On May 3, we will be recognizing “Hats on for Mental Health” at our school. We will be asking students to wear a special hat on this day to help raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Each May, Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Participating schools will relax their hat rules and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school. Whether its a sombrero, a fedora or a favorite sports hat, all favorite hats are encouraged. For those students who choose to do so, we will have a collection jar at the front office for donations to the Alberta Mental Health Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association. More information is on the website:

Reading Challenge

Students came home with blue reading challenges forms today.

We are promoting this reading challenge as a lead-up to Children’s Book Week. The challenge will run from today until Thursday, May 11th. We ask that on Thursday, May 11th all the returned reading challenge forms are returned to the school. Every student who returns their reading log will receive a 'reading prize’/token of recognition.

In addition to the reading log, at the bottom of the form is an area for students to predict how many books they think all the students in the school can read during that time period. The student that makes the closest prediction to the number of books read will win a prize. Our hope is to have the prizes distributed on Friday, May 12th by the end of the day.

Happy Reading!

Sophie suggested that if students do a few jobs at home, they might earn money to spend at the Souk. Some examples might be: doing homework; cleaning the house or your room; doing the dishes; cleaning the bathroom; setting the table; grooming or feeding your pet; doing the laundry or changing your sheets.
The price list for the Souk:

Souk Prices: (1 pay station -purchase tickets; 1 ticket = 1 dollar )

Friday, April 21

Today we said good-bye to Ms. Murray - our fabulous student teacher.  We will miss her around the class and wish her all the best!  Thanks to all our students for helping her learn how to be a teacher!

We are working hard on our UNESCO projects and preparing for the celebration of learning.  On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons the students participated in making products for us to sell in our "Royal Oak Souk" on May 4th.  They created some beautiful trinkets - and even some tasty snacks for the evening!

In math, we will continue to learn about perimeter.  Today we made different shapes and perimeters on Geoboards.  We also played a fun shaping building game with our Grade One buddies.

We are finishing off our postcards from traveling to other cultures.  If your child has been away, they can continue to work on this in Google Slides.  The first slide should contain their writing and the second slide should be a picture collage showing different images of the culture of the country they visited.

Tuesday, 18 April 2017

Tuesday, April 18th

Inquiry
Students are working hard preparing for the upcoming Celebration of Learning on May 4 from 6-7.
Students have been partnered up to research either an endangered UNESCO World Heritage Site or a site that is on the tentative list.  At the Celebration of Learning they will be the ambassadors to their site and try to persuade the voting body of UNESCO (you parents) that their site should either be protected or inscribed on the list. Part of their presentation will include information on Google Slides, which you are able to view at home if you'd like to see what your child is working on.
Tomorrow and Thursday students will be creating items to sell in our Royal Oak Souk - and funds raised will be donated to charity.

Writing
Students are working on their postcards from their travel to either Ukraine, Tunisia, India, or Peru.  (It was such a quick trip you probably didn't even miss them!)  Both the typing of their writing and the photos on the front of the postcard will be on Google Slides - so they can share that with you also at home!

Math
After our quick explorations of fractions, we are moving into measurement for the next few weeks.  This topic includes measure length using centimeters and meters; perimeter of shapes; sorting, classifying and building 2D and 3D shapes; time; and measuring mass and volume.  We will be starting with measuring and perimeter.

This is our last week with Ms. Murray, our student teacher.  The class and I are really going to miss her when she's gone!

Science
Students are wrapping up their work on their Animal Hearing Trading Cards.  You can view your child's work on Google drive - and if they want to work on it at home, the research links are on this blog (scroll down a few posts).

Inquiry
Students have been placed with a partner and are beginning to explore either an endangered UNESCO World Heritage Site, or a tentative World Heritage Site.  They will be working towards persuading the deciding UNESCO body (all you parents) that their site should be the one that is saved or inscribed at the upcoming Celebration of Learning on May 4th (save the date!)

Hockey Pool
There may be a hockey fan or two in the class :-) so we are holding a Play-off Pool for Round 1.  No money will be exchanged - this is for bragging rights and math only!  Students selected the team that they think will win each series and for each correct team, they will collect 25 points.  We will do the same activity for each round, and tally our points as the playoffs continue (hopefully they are done by the end of June)!  Go Flames Go!!

Circle Meeting
In our Circle of Courage meeting today, the students discussed some important issues that both they and we (teachers and adults) have been noticing.  I've been hearing the occasional complaint about students feeling like they are being excluded or that other students are following them around or not being kind.  We reminded ourselves about one of the most important rules in our classroom: Take Care of Each Other.  Friendship issues are not easy and as parent I know how important they are to our children's overall well-being.  One student suggested that if they have a concern or bad thought about another person they should talk to their parent, and their parent may help them understand more about the situation.  What a great idea!  Parents, if you hear something from your child that you think I need to know about, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Studio Bell National Music Centre Field Trip

Our class had a fantastic time learning and exploring the brand new Studio Bell National Music Centre.  In groups, students worked through a scavenger hunt on an IPad  which allowed them to explore the historical aspect of music, music awards, and of course, dozens of different instruments.  I think a favourite activity of many students was the sound booth - and probably a few would pick the rooftop balcony we checked out at lunchtime!  It was a great day of learning - and thank you also to our group of parent volunteers - we couldn't have enjoyed the day as much without you!

Physical Education Update

We have just completed a very successful week in the gym where students participated in the combative games unit and had the opportunity to learn how to wrestle. If you happen to be in the school please check out the bulletin boards outside of the PE office for some great photos of our amazing Royal Oak Wrestlers.

This coming week we will be doing Mission Impossible. Our Secret Agents in Training will work hard to complete 4 training courses through out the week. (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) Students are asked to bring a flashlight and/or headlamp to their classes' final Mission Impossible Session, either Tuesday or Thursday. During this class the lights in the gym will be turned out and students will work hard to use their training to complete their final mission.. in the dark. Please ensure that your light is clearly labelled with your son or daughters name.

Urgent Call for Volunteers for the Casino

Urgent Call for Volunteers for the Casino

It is urgent that we get 25 more volunteers for the Casino Fundraiser which benefits all the children in the school.  If we are unable to get the volunteers, we are in danger of losing the casino as well as the $60,000 – $70,000 to support your children’s education through technology, field trips, new award winning books for the library, a potential Naturalization area and many other wonderful experiences.
